Distribution of critical metals in evolving pyrite from massive sulfide ores of the Iberian Pyrite Belt

چکیده

With >90 known deposits containing original reserves of >2400 Mt sulfide ore, the Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB) is largest volcanogenic massive (VMS) province on Earth. In these evolving mineral systems, texturally different pyrite exhibits characteristic mineralogy and trace element fingerprints. (Py-1), which well preserved in polymetallic ores that crystallized at earliest stage VMS deposit formation, consists kernels framboids surrounded by concentric colloform bands ended faceted outlines. It rich some metals like Pb, Zn, Sb As (mostly hosted as nano-to-micron-sized particles, including galena, tetrahedrite arsenopyrite) but depleted Cu, Co Bi. contrast, from pyritic Cu-rich ore overprinted late fluids spongy-looking (Py-2) or homogenous (Py-3) cores external facets with crystallographic continuity across whole single grains due to re-crystallization. Py-2 most elements exception Au Bi, occur both solid solutions inclusions. Py-3 has highest Ag, Ni (mainly associated particles tennantite, chalcopyrite gersdorffite) lowest contents form native gold. The progressive increase metal inner outer parts Py-1 matches onset economic endowment IPB, whereas are shoot processes led leached high-grade ores, very likely when mafic rocks were emplaced into footwall deposits.

Simple Efflorescent Sulphates from Iberian Pyrite Belt ( Portugal )

Poorlyand well-crystallized efflorescent sulphates sequences beginning with the simple hydrated salts from divalent to trivalent cations are described in acid mine drainage (AMD) elsewhere (Alpers et al., 1994; Nordstrom, 1999; Nordstrom and Alpers, 1999; Buckby et al., 2003; Romero et al., 2006; among others). Weathering of pyrite and pyrrothite produces acidity and Fe, followed by precipitati...

Geology: A 120 yr record of widespread contamination from mining of the Iberian pyrite belt

A metal-enriched seawater plume entering the western Mediterranean Sea through the Strait of Gibraltar originates 300 km to the west in the Rio Tinto estuary of southwestern Spain. Mining of Rio Tinto ore, one of the largest metal-rich sulfide deposits in the world, started well before Roman times. Contemporary Rio Tinto waters draining the region are highly acidic (pH 2.5) with dissolved cadmi...

Release of Heavy Metals from the Pyrite Tailings of Huangjiagou Pyrite Mine: Batch Experiments

To provide the basic information about the release of heavy metals from the pyrite tailings of Huangjiagou pyrite mine, the pyrite tailings were investigated through a series of batch experiments under different initial pH of extractant, temperature, liquid-solid (LS) ratio, and soaking time conditions. Moreover, calcium carbonate was added in the pyrite tailings to determine the reduction effe...
